Finding a ready-made costume in your closet

Halloween is one of the biggest holidays of the year at SMU.
Students look forward to the ghoulish night from the start of the semester, gearing up to trick-or-treat college style. However, there is one essential dilemma everyone must face when October rolls around: costumes.
In the college atmosphere, theme parties are thrown almost every weekend, so the opportunity to assume a disguise is not a rare one. But, deciding on a Halloween costume is inarguably more important than the average theme party, where everyone is asked to dress similarly. Halloween provides an occasion to think outside the box and put individuality on display.
This year, try to utilize what is already accessible in lieu of purchasing an over-priced, cheaply made scrap of polyester. Most are unaware that an entire Halloween costume just might be lurking deep inside their own closets - all it takes is a little creativity and effort.
A classy ensemble is hard to spot in the sea of naughty nurses, bad cops and dirty devils normally seen on Halloween.
Go back to the days of prohibition with a 1920s look. For guys, this look is achieved by dusting off the old pinstripe suit and placing a bowler hat on top of a slicked-back hairstyle. For girls, slide into a slip or sequined cocktail dress, pull on black fishnets, and position a feather in neatly coiffed curls to instantly transform into a very fashionable flapper. Polish off the look with a strand of pearls and prepare for a swinging evening.
Greek deity is another easily accomplished costume idea. Girls, take a white summer dress and gold heels or gladiator sandals to start a good foundation for a beautiful goddess. Guys can pull off this costume by simply draping an old sheet around their shoulders and waist, toga-style. Then add a crown of faux leaves (found at any craft supply store) and a strip of gold ribbon around the waist to complete both outfits.
Due to the American Apparel Effect, 1980s attire has made a huge comeback within the past year. Girls, pull together a brightly colored leotard, leg warmers and a scrunchie to be Richard Simmons ready. Guys, pull on jeans just a size too small and a neon tee. Don't forget the Crayola-colored tennis shoes and matching sweatband. This pair of electrified costumes will definitely catch everyone's eyes on Halloween night.
So, no matter what adventures arise on Oct. 31, be ready to take it all in stride with easy costume ideas compiled straight from the wardrobe already on hand.
