Maybe it's fitting. Most of America thinks the Bush administration is a joke, so the fact that an announcement on his presidential library still hasn't occurred shouldn't be a surprise.

It's a joke. But a very bad and drawn out one.

More than 400 days have now passed since the announcement that SMU was entering into exclusive negotiations with the library committee. Four hundred days!

Let's get real. No other school is going to get this library complex. It's coming to SMU.

So what are we waiting for? What is the White House waiting for? It's not like anything is going to be done in Congress for the rest of the year. They're all out campaigning and trying to get re-elected. Just think about what has happened while we've been sitting around waiting for the obvious to occur:

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has dated and dumped two blond singers.

Dallas was confused for Seattle when it rained for three months straight in April, May and June.

The Mavericks squandered one of the best regular season records in NBA history by losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Dallas voters said they wanted work on the Trinity River to go forward - again.

SMU's football team went from bowl-bound in the preseason to the toilet bowl by the end of the season.

Britney Spears went in and out of rehab who knows how many times.

Iowa and New Hampshire voters decided the rest of the country should be allowed to help pick the nominees this election cycle.

To sum it up, life continued to move along everywhere else except here on the Hilltop. It's like we are stuck in a horrible time warp where nothing is being done but we have to keep pretending that the Bushes could pack up their books and go elsewhere.

They aren't. No one else wants the library at this point. Or the Bushes for that matter.

For better or worse, it will be at SMU.

So just end the needless suspense. Get it over with. Build the stage, inflate the balloons, bake the cake and get the shiny shovels out of storage for another groundbreaking ceremony.

Do it and do it now before SMU becomes as big a joke as the president is.
