There's been a definite increase in participation in Homecoming Week events, according to Student Foundation Homecoming Committee Chair Cathleen Good. Various SMU students spent Halloween day helping various agencies in the Dallas area for SMU's Community Service Day. Participants met at the flagpole at 9:45 a.m. for check-in and loaded the buses around 10:30 a.m. to head to their designated locations. The majority of the participants were from SMU's Greek community, whose time and effort not only went to the service projects, but also to support their homecoming candidates by earning points. Homecoming is a time to welcome back alumni and honor traditions. Among the customs at SMU, the Mustang Band is one of the biggest at the games. However, within the Mustang Band exist several traditions that are honored throughout the year, as well as during Homecoming. (0) comments

Jerry LeVias refers to himself as a smashed bug on a car windshield. The first African-American player on the SMU football team, LeVias had his fair share of difficulties while adjusting to life in Dallas. As conditions improved, LeVias began to appreciate the opportunity given to him by SMU, but it was not always easy when it came to roaming the campus and playing segregated schools. (0) comments

Countless students at Southern Methodist University have benefited thanks to the efforts of alumnus Frederick B. Hegi Jr., whose name is one of those most closely associated with SMU. It is through his many contributions to the University that many students have found their path forward, either through the Hegi career fairs or through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin on the popular television show "The Office," chose to come to SMU in 1991 because of the acting program. He looked at several schools, including Northwestern, Duke, and USC, before choosing SMU. "I knew SMU would have what I wanted; it was the absolute best school in the country for actor training," Baumgartner said. (1) comment
