On June 11, 2007, President Turner commissioned a Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention, and on April 15 the recommendations were given to President Turner, and now those recommendations have been acted on. In a press release President Turner stated, "It is our hope, however, that the many recommendations we will implement will strengthen a culture of personal responsibility and academic achievement," after saying that no one recommendation would help solve the problem. Justin Montgomery graduated from SMU in December 2006 with a degree in accounting, and had to pay $40 for his diploma. He is scheduled to graduate in May with a master's degree in accounting. Once again, he will have to pay $40 to SMU for his diploma. Montgomery believes the graduation fees in addition to his self-paid tuition are unnecessary ways SMU makes a little extra cash. Students were treated to some early "Summer Lovin'" Friday in the Main Quad when Student Foundation sponsored the "Grease" themed Mane Event. The Mane Event is a carnival-style end of the year celebration put on for students to welcome the end of classes and the nearing of summer break. (0) comments
The South Central Regional Conference for a U.S. Department of Peace chose SMU as its host this past weekend, with events taking place in Hughes-Trigg. The conference has the goal in mind to create awareness and start a grassroots movement to install a cabinet-level position and department dealing with both domestic and international peace issues.
