On Dec. 21, SMU President R. Gerald Turner informed the university community that the George W. Bush Presidential Library Search Committee had chosen to enter into exclusive negotiations with SMU. On Jan. 5, President Turner notified the university community that the project now included a proposal for a Bush Institute, independent of SMU and answerable only to the Bush Foundation (the funding arm for the library). Even for those of us who can't abide the Bush administration, the opportunity to host his presidential library would be fantastic. In the 1980s, Duke University faculty and students successfully forced the Nixon Library to go elsewhere. But they were focusing on the inevitable propaganda of a presidential museum, and they missed the great chance to have the scholarly resource of the library. (0) comments
